Post divorce: How can I keep a parent-child relationship?

Relationships commonly fail, and although it is never ideal to separate a family unit with young children involved, it's often a harsh reality and the best possible option for all parties involved. Once you've come to terms with the fact that a divorce is going to take place, probably the most important steps is to ensure that your child or children experience a smooth transition.

This article will provide a brief overview on how to know whether your child is coping well with the dramatic change, and how to find the new normal in your relationship with your child now that you may not have full custody of him or her.

The telling signs that your child is not coping well

Divorce can be a confusing and occasionally traumatic experience for children. Therefore, it's important to be vigilant for signs of sadness, anger and hints that a child is feeling torn between parents. You should take the time to explain to your child, no matter what age, what is happening between his or her parents, and explain that the child is not to blame.

Keep it consistent

Don't underestimate the effect that a divorce can have on a child, even if he or she does not seem to be exhibiting the signs above. Making an effort to avoid the disruption of routines can mitigate some of the feelings a child may be taking on. Therefore, make sure that after-school activities still continue, limit exposure to new romantic partners and try to create quality bonding time for each child.
